Kids on the street

STEPHANIE and JUSTIN... While Stephanie is not a facebook user, she uses MySpace and her mom is a friend there.

Justin is a facebook user and is friends with his mom. His words..."How I could say 'no,' she's my mother. I want to eat at the holidays."

DANIEL (left) TYLER (right)...both were facebook users. Daniel is friends with his mom, Tyler is not as his mother isn't on facebook. If she were, he would friend her. Incidentally, Tyler doesn't smile...not for the camera, not ever.

My own facebook friends story...

I came up with the idea of the t-shirt, as I have experienced the parent/child facebook friending conundrum from both sides. My own children, both in college now, would not friend me initially. My daughter friended me first, but she has over 1000 fb friends so friending me turned out to be no big deal. My son refused to friend me for quite some time. "It's just weird and wrong," he would say. Then he went off to college and changed his mind...we are now facebook friends. I suspect he may have two accounts...

When my own parents joined facebook and sent me a friend request, I must admit, I felt a little like my son had. It's not like I ever post anything scandalous, but I do feel a need on occasion to edit what I post in deference to my parents.

I was curious about other's experiences with friending their parents on facebook, particularly their mothers. As many of my t-shirt wearers have said, "well it's my mom..." There's a universal understanding in that phrase. But there is still a choice to be made and reasons behind it, and the t-shirt was a way to start the conversation.
